Tiny Lending Libraries

Reading Town PEI works to place small, accessible book exchange boxes in neighborhoods across PEI. Each Tiny Lending Library celebrates reading and promote curbside literacy through community book sharing.

These little community magnets foster a reading culture in what ever neighbourhood they are adopted into.  The libraries encourage the development of sharing networks and support universal access to a diversity of literature.

Tiny lending libraries are a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbours share their favourite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Tiny Lending Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. As part of Reading Town Canada we have installed 9 Tiny Lending Libraries in 2015, and will install more across PEI in 2016 and beyond.

We host a digital directory for the tiny lending libraries. If you have a tiny library please register with us and join our MAP.

Step one = decorate it and make it your own. The individual character of every Tiny Lending Library adds to their charm and helps them stand out in the community! You will also need to identify a space on your property where you can install the library. A location that is accessible to the public is a must.

Your Tiny Lending Library will come full of books to get you started but we suggest you build a relationship with your local public library and reading community to ensure that the library doesn’t run out of books and stays stocked with interesting reads. (Many bookstores or libraries have seconds that they either donate or ….)

From time to time the library may be damaged and need some repair. Knowing someone in your community who can assist you in the maintenance of the library will be very helpful. You will be able to find the materials from the local hardware store.

Ultimately, as the steward of the Tiny Lending Library you are responsible for its existence, but the design is simple in the hopes that the libraries can exist for long amounts of time in the communities that nurture them.
